It is with great pleasure that I acknowledge the outstanding work of Varuna, the National Writers' House, and celebrate the renewed multi-year funding support that will sustain this incredible institution. Varuna is not only one of the most significant cultural assets of our Blue Mountains community, but also Australia's foremost organisation for the development of literature. It provides a platform for writers to flourish, a sanctuary for creativity and a space for our community to connect with the transformative power of the written word.
I am absolutely thrilled to announce that the New South Wales Labor Government has committed to renewing Varuna's funding to the tune of $720,000 over the next three years. This support will ensure the sustainability of its essential work, including residencies for writers, professional development programs and, of course, the iconic Blue Mountains Writers' Festival. This funding is a testament to the value that we place on literature and the arts, and it marks a pivotal moment in securing the future of Varuna's important contribution to our national cultural landscape. I will share some of the heartfelt words of the staff at Varuna upon hearing the news of this renewed funding. They expressed a collective sense of incredible relief, which is something I believe we can all empathise with. Bianca Nogrady, chair of the Eleanor Dark Foundation, eloquently stated:
"More than any other artform, it is writers who interpret the complexity of the world in which we live and help deepen our understanding of humanity."
This powerful sentiment speaks to the profound role that writers play in shaping our understanding of society and our place within it. The story of Varuna is one that is deeply intertwined with the cultural heritage of the Blue Mountains. Originally the home of esteemed writers Eleanor Dark and Dr Eric Dark, Varuna has been a beacon of Australian literature since it was gifted to the Australian public in 1989 by their son, Mick Dark. Mick's vision was clear: He wanted Varuna to be a sanctuary for writers—a place where they could retreat from the pressures of daily life, immerse themselves in their craft and find the space and support to produce new works.
Since being gifted to the public, Varuna has inspired generations of Australian writers, from emerging voices to established authors. Through its fellowships, writers' residencies and community events, Varuna has nurtured a rich and vibrant literary culture. It has opened the doors for new narratives to emerge, for stories to be shared and for the Blue Mountains to remain a hub of literary creativity. The Blue Mountains Writers' Festival, which Varuna hosts, is a true highlight of our cultural calendar. This year the festival will be held from 31 October to 2 November, and I look forward to attending once again. The theme this year is "A Path to Wonder" and it promises to be another outstanding celebration of the power of storytelling. We will hear from some of the best writers and thinkers in the country, showcasing a wealth of diverse voices and perspectives.
I extend my warm congratulations to Veechi Stuart, Maeve Marsden and the entire team at Varuna on their tireless dedication in bringing this festival to life year after year. Their efforts ensure that the Blue Mountains Writers' Festival continues to thrive, bringing together writers and readers from around the world and placing our region firmly on the national literary map. Varuna is an organisation that truly exemplifies the Blue Mountains spirit. It is driven by a passionate and committed team of staff and volunteers whose work brings lasting cultural, educational and social benefits to our community. It is through institutions like Varuna that we are reminded of the incredible importance of the arts in our lives and how literature can inspire, challenge and unite us.
This year's festival is an event that everyone should have on their calendar. It is a landmark occasion for Australian literature and supports the growth and recognition of writers who shape the cultural landscape of our nation. Whether you are a passionate reader, a budding writer or simply someone who wants to be part of an event that showcases our creative excellence, I encourage you to attend and engage in this unique celebration of words. I congratulate Varuna on all its achievements and express my deep appreciation for the contributions it makes to both our local community and the broader literary world. I look forward to attending the festival this spring, and I encourage all members of our community and beyond to get involved and support this fantastic event.
