Work to improve pedestrian safety in Mount Victoria will start on Monday next week (September 14), with the Minns Labor Government delivering new safety measures on Station Street following the significant increase in traffic through the village after the closure of Victoria Pass.

On-site investigations by Transport for NSW, in conjunction with community consultation, considered a number of traffic treatments before determining the best solution would be the installation of pedestrian refuge island on Station Street. This allows pedestrians to cross one lane of traffic at a time, with a safe waiting point in the centre of the road.

Crews will also install roadside kerb extensions that will narrow the width of the road to reduce pedestrians’ exposure to traffic and encourage motorists to reduce their speed as they drive through the area.

In addition, Transport for NSW is investigating new treatments for the village including extra signage and line-marking as motorists enter Station Street from the Great Western Highway to reinforce the message that motorists are in an urban environment.

Work to install the new pedestrian safety measures on Station Street will be carried out over 21 night shifts starting on Monday September 14 and finishing by Thursday November 5, weather permitting.

Work hours will be 8pm to 5am from Sunday to Thursday with no work on Friday and Saturday nights, public holidays, or during peak periods such as the Bathurst 1000.

Member for Blue Mountains, Trish Doyle said:

“The closure of Victoria Pass has had a significant impact on the community of Mount Victoria, and I’m pleased the Minns Labor Government is acting on concerns raised by local residents about pedestrian safety.

“With more traffic now moving through Station Street, it’s important we make it safer and easier for people to get around on foot in the village.

“These new pedestrian and traffic measures will make a real difference, particularly for older residents, parents with prams and people with reduced mobility.

“Most importantly, these changes have come directly from conversations with the Mount Victoria community.

“I want to thank locals for their continued input and constructive feedback during what has been a really challenging and stressful time for the residents of Mount Victoria, and those in the surrounding villages and towns trying to get up and down the Mountains.”

Changed traffic conditions including lane closures and a reduced 40 km/h speed limit will be in place during work hours, while Montgomery Street will be closed on selected nights between Station Street and Carrington Avenue with detours in place via Carrington Avenue and Cobb Lane.

Transport for NSW will maintain access for local traffic at all times.

Motorists are reminded to drive and ride to the conditions and to follow the directions of signs and traffic controllers.
