The speed limit on the Great Western Highway between Medlow Bath and Blackheath will be permanently set at 70 km/h for the safety of all road users travelling through the Blue Mountains.
Transport for NSW reviewed the speed limit on this section of highway following a cluster of recent crashes at Cants Corner and in response to community concerns about safety in the area.
In February, the speed limit was temporarily reduced from 80 km/h to 60 km/h. With a formal speed zone review process now completed, a permanent 70 km/h speed limit will take effect.
Member for Blue Mountains, Trish Doyle said:
“The safety of everyone travelling around and through the Blue Mountains is my priority. I’ve been working with the Minister, Transport for NSW and local community groups, to address concerns about this stretch, and I’m pleased we’ve secured this 70 km/h limit in response to crashes at Cants Corner,” Ms Doyle said.
“This is a practical step that reflects strong community advocacy and a thorough review by Transport for NSW.
"It’s a small change to travel time, but an important improvement for safety, and Transport for NSW will continue monitoring the site to identify any further measures needed.”
Night work to install new signage and line-marking to support the permanent speed limit change will take place from Sunday May 3 with the new permanent speed limit to come into effect by Friday May 15
Work hours will be 8pm to 5am, and work is expected to take up to eight nights to complete, weather permitting.
For the safety of workers and motorists, changed traffic conditions, including lane closures and a reduced 40 km/h speed limit, will be in place during work hours.
Transport advises motorists to drive to conditions, follow the directions of signs and traffic control, and allow up to five minutes of extra travel time.
