NSW’s most popular national park is receiving a major boost, with the Minns Labor Government investing $7.75 million in improved walking tracks, lookouts and facilities to cater for the 7.8 million visits the Blue Mountains National Park hosts each year.
People exploring the World Heritage-listed area are already enjoying the benefits of recently completed projects with more to come in the next year.
The works ensure visitors who flock to the Mountains for its breathtaking scenery and world-renowned walks are rewarded with exceptional experiences while helping to protect the park’s unique natural and cultural values.
Completions include:
- Round Walk, which links Katoomba Falls and Scenic World has been made safer, more accessible and more resilient to extreme weather following the replacement of ageing steps and staircases, track stabilisation works, improved drainage and enhanced viewing areas.
- The once muddy descent to Princes Rock lookout in Wentworth Falls has been transformed with a new impressive stone walking track.
- Significant improvements at Fletchers Lookout will be completed this month, providing direct views over Wentworth Falls and out into the Jamison Valley.
- Improvements are also planned for the popular Nature Track, which takes bushwalkers from the Conservation Hut at Wentworth Falls down into the lush rainforest in Valley of the Waters.
- Recent safety improvements at the popular Valley View Lookout near Evans Lookout will ensure people can safely enjoy spectacular views across the Grose Valley.
- While upgrades are complete on the top section of one of the region’s favourite bushwalking routes, Golden Stairs walking track near Katoomba, further work is happening at the bottom, improving access for those who want a more remote walk to Ruined Castle or Mount Solitary.
The latest upgrades are part of the NSW Government's $130 million ongoing investment in national park infrastructure and visitor experiences, supporting regional tourism while improving accessibility.
The improvements also build on the success of the Grand Cliff Top Walk, a spectacular multi-day walking experience linking Wentworth Falls and Katoomba. The walk showcases some of the Blue Mountains’ most famous lookouts, waterfalls and natural landscapes, and has become a drawcard for domestic and international visitors.
Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment and Member for Blue Mountains Trish Doyle said:
“The Blue Mountains remains on the top of the most visited list because it is an iconic destination. And these upgrades are making it easier, safer and more enjoyable for visitors of all ages and abilities to experience the extraordinary beauty of our World Heritage-listed landscape.
"Our community is incredibly proud of our Park. National parks are a major driver of regional economic activity, providing families with affordable, world-class recreation and fostering a deep connection to nature.
“I encourage everyone to come and treasure our Park, but also to follow the Leave No Trace principle – stay on designated paths for your safety and to protect our fragile vegetation; don’t feed the wildlife and take your rubbish home – to ensure the Park remains a cherished asset for generations to come.”
NPWS Director Blue Mountains Dave Crust said:
“These walking track and lookout upgrades are about giving visitors a safer, more accessible and higher-quality experience while protecting the natural environment that makes the Blue Mountains so special.
“We're investing in infrastructure that will stand the test of time and help support the millions of visitors who enjoy the park each year.”
More people than ever are choosing to experience the natural beauty of NSW with a record 65.6 million visits* to national parks, positioning the state’s parks network as a major driver of economic activity, regional development and affordable outdoor recreation.
