State-heritage listed Mount Victoria railway station has been voted by ABC listeners as the best railway station in Sydney, as funds have been secured for its accessibility upgrade.

Member for the Blue Mountains, Trish Doyle, MP, confirmed the station accessibility upgrade during a live and chilly ABC radio morning broadcast at the railway station, with 702 breakfast host Craig Reucassel on Thursday July 30.

The key benefits for the station will include new lifts, upgraded station forecourts, family accessible toilets, modifications to the waiting room, improved access to accessible parking spaces, taxi zone and upgraded kiss-and-ride facilities, provision of sheltered bicycle parking, lighting, CCTV and wayfinding signage, as well as new hearing loops and platform boarding and tactile indicators.

The ABC survey voted Mount Victoria as Sydney’s best train station due to its beautiful sandstone buildings, lush gardens, and all important, heated waiting rooms.

“I’m excited to be in Mount Victoria to celebrate this heritage station and to announce the lifts are coming,” Ms Doyle said.

“I’m very mindful the station’s heritage beauty needs to be preserved.

“These upgrades are what is needed to improve accessibility and safety, while respecting the unique and historic character of the station.”

Community feedback has helped shape the concept designs for both Mount Victoria and Lawson railway stations. Both stations are on the NSW State Heritage Register and are fully funded for the upgrades. The station designs will ensure the upgrades meet local needs and improve customer experience.

Throughout 2024 and 2025 Transport for NSW consulted on concept designs for both stations with various groups, including people with disability and carers, advocacy groups and peak bodies for people with disabilities, Blue Mountains City Council and its Access Committee, among others.

“Protecting heritage character was a major priority – for the upgrades to be sympathetic to the historic nature of both stations,” Ms Doyle said.

There will be a Review of Environmental Factors, procurement of a contractor and detailed design and development, as well as planning and heritage approvals. The process is expected to take about 15 months, followed by 18 months construction.

“As heritage listed stations, these upgrades will ensure they are brought up to the modern safety and accessibility standards so they can continue to service the community and visitors well into the future,” Ms Doyle added.

The NSW Government’s Safe Accessible Transport [SAT] program aims to make public transport safe, inclusive and easy to use or all passengers, especially people with disability, older people, people with prams or luggage and others who may be experiencing mobility problems. The upgrades follow Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport. More than 72 per cent of suburban, intercity, metro and regional stations across NSW are now independently accessible.

As part of the 2026-27 NSW Budget, the NSW Government is announcing an additional $200 million to the SAT program, bringing the program total to more than $1 billion since the 2023-24 Budget.

Some 77, 549 people travel through Lawson train station each year and 56,982 travel through Mount Victoria.
