I acknowledge the life of Peter James Sparkes and pay tribute to his contribution to the Blue Mountains community. Peter lived a long and full life. He was born on 13 July 1938 and died on 4 March 2024. He lived in Winmalee with his darling wife, Lynda. He was father and father-in-law to David and Peta, Mike and Kylé, Geoff and Liz, and David and Maki. He was Poppy and Poppa to a huge extended family and uncle to many nieces and nephews. Peter's niece Rebecca described him as “one of a kind and a unique, loving and lovable family man.”
Peter had a long career with the NSW Department of Education and became one of the youngest ever principals. He was highly respected as a colleague, teacher and leader. He was a valued member of the Rotary Club of Springwood for more than 34 years and was elected to the office of President twice. He was a longstanding member of the Blue Mountains Freemasons: a man who was fair and square.
He was adored by many in my community. He was kind and generous, with a great sense of humour. I had the great pleasure of knowing Peter and being welcomed into his world. He was salt of the earth. Today, I honour him. Rest in Peace, good man.
