I am pleased to recognise Dr John Merson on being awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the 2026 Australia Day Honours. This honour reflects Dr Merson's outstanding commitment to environmental conservation, particularly through his leadership as co-founder of the Blue Mountains World Heritage Institute. His vision, determination and care for our natural environment have played a vital role in protecting this extraordinary landscape for future generations. The Blue Mountains is a place we all hold dear, and Dr Merson's tireless work has helped ensure its values are safeguarded.
