Construction Worker Mental Health

I recently joined three relatively small but fantastic local construction companies in the Blue Mountains as they downed tools to spend the day talking and learning and practising living a healthy life.

The day was named Get Healthy at Work. Blue Eco Homes, Steelworx Construction and Woodford Homes staff participated in practical, engaging, collaborative and theory-based sessions throughout the day at Trees Adventure in Yarramundi.

Transport Administration Amendment (Transport Entities) Bill 2017

I make a contribution to the debate on the Transport Administration Amendment (Transport Entities) Bill 2017.

I want to address the Berejiklian Government's early-stage attempts to ready the public transport system for privatisation. I spoke just last week in this place about the toxic, twisted priorities of the Berejiklian-O'Farrell-Baird Government as it relates to public transport.

There have been three Premiers in six years, but the agenda remains the same. Privatisation is the mantra of this Government and every Liberal Government that has come before it. It is disgraceful. Its only reason for being is to take public assets owned by the people of New South Wales and, through crooked deals, hand those assets off to the private sector at a discount price.

Girl Guides Movement

In October of last year at NSW Parliament, I was fortunate to participate in ‘Guiding at the House’ which was hosted by Girl Guides NSW & ACT.

Girl Guides State Commissioner Sarah Neill, and Chief Executive Officer Peta Gillies, participated in this gathering.

Rail Privatisation

I acknowledge the presence in the Chamber tonight of our Shadow Minister for Transport and Infrastructure. But I rise once again to discuss the poor performance of Andrew Constance, the Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, and in doing so I remind him of his key performance indicators [KPIs].

The Minister is responsible for running a public transport system on behalf of the taxpayers and citizens of New South Wales. The public transport system should be affordable, efficient and reliable, and it should be administered in the public interest. Those are the Minister's KPIs, and he is failing each and every one of them.

'New Intercity Fleet' Contract

I am placing on the table, for the benefit of members, an article from today's Blue Mountains Gazette which is my source for the information in my statement today.

Yet again I find myself in this Chamber with a bundle of notes in front of me about the ongoing farce unfolding within the New South Wales Government that is its mishandling of the New South Wales intercity fleet procurement project.

Katoomba RSL Club Fire

On 24 February 2017 my community was absolutely shocked when news came through that the Katoomba RSL was on fire.

Sadly, it was mostly destroyed. The club's generosity over many decades, whether through the support of the Clubs Grants program or the provision of a venue for fundraising events, has not gone unnoticed.

Slow Food Movement

I acknowledge the Slow Food movement and its activities in the Blue Mountains, inspired by the vibrant and energetic Anne Elliott.

Slow Food Blue Mountains has been flourishing since 2006 under the guidance of Anne. She lives and breathes the Slow Food refrain: "Change the menu; change the world."

NSW Coal and Gas Mining Projects

I congratulate the activists and environmentalists who have worked so hard to collect more than 10,000 signatures to this important petition. Like the signatories, I have deep and grave concerns about the risks of coal seam gas [CSG] exploration and extraction.

In 2015 I welcomed the Labor policy announcement to adopt a moratorium on coal seam gas across the State. In my electorate of the Blue Mountains the community takes a very keen interest in the evolution of public policy in this area. The villages of the Blue Mountains are sited along a ridge line that cuts straight through the middle of pristine, World Heritage listed national park. The national park also takes in much of the waterways that form Sydney's drinking water catchment area that feeds Warragamba Dam.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service

I address the impact on my electorate of cuts to National Parks and Wildlife Service rangers and field officers.

The Blue Mountains electorate is predominantly a World Heritage listed national park, with a small sliver of built-up areas running through the middle. The national park plays a crucial role in the local economy and the day-to-day lives of my constituents.

I was alarmed to learn, through answers to questions on notice, that the Baird-Berejiklian Government made significant staffing cuts that will gut the organisation of the expertise and capacity it requires to do its job. I have been contacted by National Parks and Wildlife Service staff, who wish to remain anonymous, who detailed to me the extent and ramification of the cuts.

Committee Report: Transport and Infrastructure

As a member of the Committee on Community Services, I make a brief contribution to debate on our report regarding access to transport for seniors and disadvantaged people in rural and regional New South Wales.

I thank my committee colleagues and express my appreciation to Dora Oravecz and the team of excellent staff who worked ably with us to gather stories and to hear the concerns of people across our State.
